Ja, wir haben's beide geschafft.

Yes, we both did it.

Jana hat ihre Kastration gut überstanden. Die OP lief problemlos, und als sie nach hause kam, machte sie schon wieder einen recht wachen Eindruck. Ab heute Morgen war sie dann wieder ganz die Alte: sie frisst, spielt und schnurrt, als wäre nie was gewesen. Jetzt hoffen wir nur, dass es mit den Nähten keine Komplikationen gibt (Bitterpaste und Desinfektionsmittel sind für alle Fälle vorhanden), dann ist bald alles überstanden.

Jana got over her castration pretty well. The operation went without problems and when she came home she already appeared pretty awake. And since this morning she's back to her old self: she eats, plays and purrs, as though nothing ever happened. Now we just hope there won't be any complications with the seams (bitter paste and disinfectant are available just in case), then soon everything will be over.

So langsam scheint es nun doch unweigerlich Winter zu werden, was man nicht nur am weißen Überzug auf den Autos sehen kann, sondern auch daran, dass die lieben Sibirer inzwischen doch deutlich buschiger und voluminöser wirken. So auch unsere:

Dodo vom Bambuswald, der mich nach einer anstrengenden Kletter-Session mit intensivem Begrüßungskuscheln wieder aufbaut. Es kommt mir auch so vor, als würe er in letzter Zeit noch anschmiegsamer und verschmuster werden als vorher. Ob das mit der Kastration zusammenhängt oder ich es mir nur einbilde ... Keine Ahnung. Aber schön.

Dodo vom Bambuswald, whose intense welcome cuddling raises my spirits after an exhausting climbing session. It even seems to me as though lately he's getting even more cuddly than before. Whether that's got anythig to do with the castration or simply my imagination ... no idea. But nice.

A propos Kastration: Jana hat jetzt auch ihren Termin bekommen und ist am Freitag Morgen fällig. Und wie schon bei Dodo bemühe ich mich, mir keine allzu großen Sorgen zu machen. Falls aber trotzdem jemand ein paar hilfreiche Gedanken in ihre Richtung schicken möchte, würden wir uns sehr freuen ...

Und endlich habe ich auch das, was natürlich das allerwichtigste für einen Roman ist: Der Titel. Und weil ich ihn so schön fand, habe ich mir gleich das schöne Banner oben dazu gebastelt :-)

Unfortunately it doesn't translate all that well into English - the literal translation would be something like Shadow Side, while the meaning would be better expressed as Dark Side. Oh well, it sounds pretty snappy in German, and thus I also made the nice matching banner above :-)

Woohoo! Ich hab's tatsächlich geschafft, heute noch die 25.000 zu erreichen - um genau zu sein, stehe ich im Moment bei 25227 Wörtern. Go me!

Okay, das Wochenende war doch ziemlich unergiebig. Dafür war ich am Samstag bei einem Workshop zum Familienstellen. Sehr interessant. Ich habe zwar nicht selbst gestellt, durfte aber als Statistin mitmachen. Das war wirklich spannend, was da so alles in einem passiert, wenn man für eine andere Person steht. Beim nächsten Mal stelle ich dann vielleicht auch selber ...

Okay, the weekend was pretty unproductive after all. But then on Saturday I participated in a Family Constellation workshop. Very interesting. I didn't present an issue myself, but I got to serve as a representative. It was really thrilling to experience what happened in me while I was standing for another person. Perhaps next time I'll set up a constellation myself ...

Am Sonntag war ich dann zum ersten Mal seit über einem Jahr wieder klettern. Ja, der Ehrgeiz hat mich gepackt, und ich möchte es jetzt endlich wieder regelmäßig betreiben und auch mal ein paar Fortschritte in meinen Kletterkünsten sehen. Inzwischen weiß ich auch wieder, warum es so viel Spaß macht - und warum ich danach so fertig bin ... wobei ich gestern nicht aus mangelnder Kraft aufhören musste, sondern weil meine Finger einfach unanständig wehgetan haben. Ich hoffe mal, dass sich da bald wieder ein bisschen Hornhaut bildet.

Then on Sunday I've been indoor climbing for the first time in over a year. Yes, the ambition has grabbed me and I finally want to do it regularly again and even see some progress in my climbing skills. By now I've also realised again just why it is so much fun - and why I'm so knackered afterwards ... though yesterday I didn't have to stop for lack of strength, but because my fingers hurt too much. I really hope I'll grow some calluses soon.

Und was die Schreiberei angeht: Heute hat es mich endlich so richtig gepackt, das NaNo-Fieber. Die ganze Zeit lief es so irgendwie nebenher und ich konnte mich nicht so richtig begeistern. Aber als ich heute Morgen in mein Excel-Sheet geschaut und festgestellt habe, wie weit ich zurückliege, hat es sich endlich in eine richtige Herausforderung verwandelt. Und ich verkünde hiermit: Ich werde es schaffen! Auch wenn ich nur noch 14 Tage für 31.000 Wörter habe!

And concerning the writing business: Today it finally flared up, the NaNo-fever. All month it just went along on the side and I couldn't get all that excited. But when I looked at my spreadsheet today and realised just how much I am behind, it finally turned into a real challenge. And I hereby announce: I will do it! Even though I only have 14 days left for 31,000 words!

Mein erstes Zwischenziel: Nachdem ich heute schon die 20k geknackt habe, sind morgen die 25k fällig. Egal was kommt. Und wenn ich nach der Schule noch bis morgens um zwei schreiben muss - ehe ich morgen schlafen gehe, werde ich die Halbzeit erreichen.

Ringelsocken / Striped Socks

Man glaubt es kaum, aber es gibt tatsächlich noch Faseriges in meinem Leben. Das geht hier im Moment ein bisschen unter, einerseits, weil ich mit NaNo beschäftigt bin, und andererseits, weil ich mich mitten im Weihnachsstricken befinde. Und was dabei rauskommt, wird erst nach Weihnachten veröffentlicht. Soll ja für die jeweiligen Empfänger eine Überraschung sein :-)

Hard to believe, there is still a fibery aspect to my life. This is fading into the background here on the one hand because I am pretty busy with NaNo and on the other because I'm in the middle of the Christmas knitting. And the results of that won't be posted until after Christmas. After all, it's supposed to be a surprise for the respective recipients :-)

Wie auch immer, gestern habe ich zufällig ein fertig gestricktes Paar Socken gefunden, bei dem ich nur noch die Fäden vernähen musste (ja, ich weiß, das schiebe ich gern vor mir her, und ich werde hier auch nicht verraten, wie lange die Socken schon rumgelegen haben). Und voilà: Neue Socken!

Rätselsocke Auflösung / Mystery Sock: The Solution

Nachdem das Socktoberfest und die Mit-Strick-Aktion nun doch vorbei sind, ist hier meine Auflösung für die Rätselsocke:

Since Socktoberfest and the Knit-Along are now over, here is my solution for the mystery sock:


Ich muss allerdings zugeben, dass ich mich nicht ganz an die Vorgabe gehalten habe. Dort war nämlich eine normale, glatt rechts gestrickte Zehe vorgesehen. Da mir aber das Lochmuster so gut gefallen hat, wollte ich es nicht so schnell aufgeben und habe einfach auch die Zehe im Muster gestrickt. Und mir gefällt's :-)

I have to admit, though, that I took some liberties with the pattern. The original called for a normal stockinette toe. Yet I liked the lace pattern so much that I didn't want to let go of it so soon and simply knit the toe in the pattern, too. And I think it looks nice :-)

Dodo hat die Kastration gut überstanden und ist schon fast wieder ganz der Alte. Leider hat vor lauter zum-Tierarzt-bringen, hilfreiche-Gedanken-denken, vom-Tierarzt-abholen und auf-meinem-Schoß-die-Narkose-ausschlafen-lassen die Schreibtätigkeit etwas gelitten. Naja, morgen wird wieder besser.

Dodo overcame the castration pretty well and is almost back to his old self. Unfortunately, with all the taking-to-the-vet, thinking-helpful-thoughts, picking-up-from-the-vet and letting-him-sleep-off-the-anaesthesia-on-my-lap, I hardly got any writing done. Well, tomorrow will be better.

Letzte Woche habe ich mit den beiden ein großes Abenteuer erlebt: Zum ersten Mal zum Tierarzt (zum ersten Mal für mich, nicht für die beiden). Dort waren wir zur Erstuntersuchung und zum Vorgepräch für die Kastration. Und ein Abenteuer war es schon.

Last week I had an adventure with the two of them: The very first visit to the vet (first time for me, not for then). We went there for an initial examination and preliminary talk about the castration. And an adventure it was.

Zwei Trasportkisten in meinen smart zu packen war nur der Anfang. Dann ging es los zum Tierarzt in Bensheim. Zwanzig Minuten Fahrt. Und die liebe süße Jana hat die kompletten zwanzig Minuten durchgeplärrt. Nicht aus Angst, sondern weil sie das ganze als völlig ungerechtfertigte Zumutung empfand und ich doch bitte gefälligst was unternehmen sollte. Dodo dagegen lag ganz cool im Kofferraum. Nur ab und zu hatte er wohl den Eindruck, wenn seine Schwester so viel Terz macht, müsste er sich auch mal zu Wort melden. Es sei ihm gegönnt.

Getting two carriers into my smart was only the beginning. Then we were off to the vet. Twenty minutes' drive. And dear sweet Jana bawling the whole twenty minutes. Not because she was frightened, but because she felt that the whole thing was a totally unprovoked imposition that that I should damn well do something about it. Dodo on the other hand was absolutely cool and calm in the trunk. Only occasionally he seemed to have the impression that if his sister was making such a racket, he should make himself heard, too.

Im Wartezimmer dann das gleiche Bild: Dodo völlig relaxt im Korb liegend, während Jana sich lautstark darüber beschwerte, was für eine fundamentale Ungerechtigkeit es doch ist, dass hier ein ganz neuer Raum ist, der dringend ausgeschnuffelt werden muss, während sie in der engen Kiste eingesperrt ist.

In the waiting room the same picture: Dodo relaxed and lying in the carrier, while Jana vocally complained about the fundamental injustice of there being a whole new room that needed to be sniffed while she was imprisoned in the tiny box.

Während der Untersuchung waren die beiden dann wie erwartet lieb und brav, wobei Jana wahrscheinlich kaum was davon mitgekriegt hat - sie war ganz auf die vielen neuen Bilder und Gerüche konzentriert.

During the examination the two of them were as expected nice and friendly, though Jana probably didn't notice much of it - she was completely focused on all the new sights and smells.

Auf der Rückfahrt wurde die Dame dann in den Kofferraum gepackt, sodass ich das Geplärre von hinten hatte statt von der Seite - deutlich angenehmer. Und kaum waren wir zu Hause, sind sie aus den Kisten spaziert, als wäre nie was gewesen ...

On the drive home the lady got to ride in the trunk, so that I had the bawling from behind instead of the side - way more comfortable. And as soon as we arrived home, they marched out of the carriers as though nothing had happened ...

Und so kommt es nun, dass unser "kleiner" Dodo schon morgen zur Kastration geht (bei Jana werden wir auf Anraten der Tierärztin noch ein paar Wochen warten). Um 8:00 Uhr ist der Termin, und obwohl ich weiß, dass die OP bei Katern ja weniger problematisch ist und Sibirer sowieso robust sind ... naja. Falls jemand morgen früh en paar hilfreiche Gedanken in seine Richtung senden möchte, würden wir uns darüber freuen.

Notiz ans Universum / Note to the Universe

Liebes Universum,

ich möchte mich dafür bedanken, dass du mir heute wieder eine wichtige Lehre erteilt hast. Es war sehr gütig von dir, heute morgen den virtuellen PC abzuschießen, auf dem sich der Beginn meines NaNo-Romans befand. Du wusstest natürlich, dass in der gleichen Datei auch alle Notizen für selbiges Buch zu finden waren und dass ich diese Datei nirgends sonst abgelegt hatte. Vielen Dank, dass du mich auf diese Weise auf die Wichtigkeit von häufigen und redundanten Backups hingewiesen hast.

Danke auch dafür, dass beim Starten noch alles normal schien, sodass ich mich erst mit ein wenig surfen und Blogs-lesen abgelenkt habe. Es war sehr hilfreich, dass der absolut fatale Windows-Crash erst passierte, als ich mich wirklich ans Schreiben gemacht hatte - ich habe jetzt verstanden, dass du möchtest, dass ich erst schreibe, ehe ich mich ablenke.

Es war auch sehr freundlich von dir, dafür zu sorgen, dass es erst nur so aussah, als wäre mein Text von gestern weg, bevor die gesamte Datei ins Nirvana entschwunden ist. So konnte ich mich schon ansatzweise an den Gedanken gewöhnen, einen Teil zu rekonstruieren. Du gibst mir die Möglichkeit, die geistige Größe zu entwickeln, auch eine Kaskade von Rückschlägen ruhig hinzunehmen. Du bist so gut zu mir.

Liebes Universum, ich danke dir dafür, dass du mir dabei hilfst, ein besserer, gewissenhafterer, reiferer Mensch zu werden. Ich hoffe, ich habe die Lektion dieses Mal gelernt und werde mich bemühen, sie zukünftig zu beherzigen.

Dear Universe,

I'd like to thank you for teaching me a valuable lesson this morning. It was very gracious of you to kill off the virtual PC where the beginning of my NaNo-novel is located. Of course you knew that the same file contained all my notes for the book, too, and that I hadn't saved it anywhere else. Thank you for thus reminding me of the importance of frequent and redundant back-ups.

I am also grateful that when I started the virtual machine, everything seemed normal, which is why I first did some surfing and blog reading to distract myself. It was absolutely helpful that the fatal Windows crash only happened once I really got to writing - I understand now that you want me to write first and get distracted later.

It was also very kind of you to make sure that at first it only seemed as though my progress from yesterday was lost before the whole file entered Nirvana. Thus I was first able to get used to the idea of reconstructing a little amount of work. You give me the chance to develop the greatness of mind to calmly deal with a cascade of set-backs. You are so good to me.

Dear universe, thank you for helping me become a better, more conscientious, more mature person. I hope I've learned the lesson this time and will try to take it to heart in the future.

NaNo Tag 2: 446 / NaNo Day 2: 446

Gah. Meine geistigen Schreibmuskeln sind doch ganz schön eingerostet im letzten Jahr. Nicht mal 500 Wörter an einem Tag ist eigentlich ziemlich erbärmlich, aber irgendwie war nicht mehr drin. Naja, ich werde mich einfach bemühen, mich jeden Tag ein bisschen zu steigern, bis ich wieder in Form bin. Sind ja noch 28 Tage übrig ...

Gah. My mental writing muscles really did get rusty in the past year. Not even 500 words in a day is pretty pathetic, but somehow there just wasn't more. Well, I'll just have to improve a little every day until I'm back in shape. After all, there are still 28 days left ...

Und weil's garantiert jeden interessiert, mein erster Satz: Tief durchatmen, lächeln, Tür auf.

NaNo Tag 1: 0 / NaNo Day 1: 0

Kein allzu vielversprechender Anfang, gebe ich zu ... Aber dafür waren mein Prinz und ich heute den ganzen Tag auf der TREND, einer ganzheitlichen Gesundheitsmesse. Interessant, sowas mal zu erleben, und die Vorträge waren spannend, bewegend und lustig.

Not an altogether promising beginning, I admit ... But then my prince and I spent all day on the TREND, a holistic health fair. Very interesting experience, and the lectures were fascinating, moving and funny.

Anschließend sind wir dann zum Chinesen gefahren und haben uns am Buffet zwei Mitnehm-Boxen vollgepackt (mit dem üblichen Effekt dass ich am Buffet dachte "Die Box reicht nie im Leben" und später feststellte, dass ich an der Portion mindestens zweimal essen kann ...). Und nachdem ich nun bis zum Kehldeckel mit China-Essen vollgestopft bin, ist alles Blut in den Verdauungstrakt ausgewandert und mit dem Schreiben wird das heute nichts mehr.

After that we went to a Chinese restaurant were we stuffed two take-away boxes at the buffet (with the usual effect of me thinking at the buffet "This box is never going to be enough to get me full" and later realising that its content is going to make at least two meals) And now that I'm full to the larynx with Chinese food, all my blood has migrated to the digestive tract and there won't be any writing today.
