Was lange währt ... / At long last ...

Es ist vollbracht! Das Spinnprojekt, dass ich vor langer Zeit (okay, im Juli, aber es kommt mir lang vor) begonnen habe, ist endlich zur Vollendung gekommen. Siehe:

Wie man an der Umrechnung erkennen kann, war ich im Großen und Ganzen relativ konstant in der Fadenstärke. In den Garnen selbst ist natürlich einiges an Varianz, aber nachdem ich sie mir jetzt nochmal eingehend betrachtet habe, bin ich doch sehr zufrieden damit.

As you can gather from the conversion, all in all I've been pretty consistent in the yarn weight. Of course, in the skeins themselves there is a lot of variance, but after having a good look at it, I'm still pretty pleased.

Und jetzt? Jetzt werde ich zusehen, dass ich mir passende Perlen besorge. Und dann werde ich das Ganze irgendwo positionieren, wo ich es jeden Tag sehe, mich jeden Tag daran freue - und mich jeden Tag daran erinnere, dass zuerst das Weihnachtsstricken erledigt wird. Denn das hat jetzt erstmal Vorrang ...

And now? Now I'll see about getting some matching beads. And then I'll place the whole somewhere where I can look at it every day, enjoy it every day - and be reminded every day that first there has to be the Christmas knitting. Because for now that has to take priority ...

Zielgerade / Home Stretch

Mein Tour de Fleece Projekt ist inzwischen soweit gediehen, dass ich schon fast die Ziellinie sehen kann. Da ich ja psychologisch geschickt mit der größten Faserportion angefangen und mich zu den kleineren hingearbeitet habe, habe ich jetzt das Gefühl, dass es immer schneller geht und sich beinah von alleine spinnt :-) Nach einem kurzen Boxenstop, um endlich das rote Garn zu dämpfen und die Haspeln frei zu bekommen, habe ich jetzt statt diesem:

Since I cleverly started with the largest batch of fiber and worked my way towards the smaller ones, I feel now as though it's going faster and faster and almost spinning itself :-) After a short pit stop to finally get the red yarn steamed and free the niddy noddies, instead of this:

Zwei von Vier / Two Down, Two to Go

Trotz Katzen geht mein Tour de Fleece Spinnprojekt natürlich immer noch weiter, wenn auch unter erschwerten Bedingungen - so ein wackelndes, sich drehendes Spindelding lädt einfach dazu ein, mit den Pfoten danach zu schlagen ... Also spinne ich, wenn die beiden schlafen oder eben nicht in Spielstimmung sind.

Even with the cats my Tour de Fleece spinning project continues, despite aggravated conditions - this tumbling, twirling spindle thingie is just asking to be batted around with one's paws ... Thus I spin while the two of them are asleep or not in a playful mood.

Und da jetzt beide Haspeln belegt sind, werde ich mich mal ans Dämpfen machen. Dann habe ich endlich auch richtiges Garn in der Hand :-)

And since both niddy noddies are occupied now, I'll have to get started on the steaming. Then I'll finally have some real yarn, too :-)

Tour de Fleece - Geschafft! I did it!

Nachdem ich letzte Woche meinen persönlichen Endspurt hingelegt habe, habe ich die Tour am Wochenende (wieder zwei Tage Seminar) sanft ausklingen lassen. Und ich bin stolz auf mich, denn: Ich hab's geschafft! 23 Tage lang jeden Tag mindestens eine halbe Stunde gesponnen, und an den meisten Tagen sogar wesentlich mehr. Go me!

After giving my final sprint last week, I let the Tour wind down gently on the weekend (another two-day workshop). And I'm proud of myself: I did it! For each of the 23 days I spent at least half an hour spinning, and most days I did a lot more. Go me!

The initial amount of roving was turned into this:


130 g / ca. 1200 m rostrotes Laceweight, und ein paar Gramm der kirschroten Wolle sind auch schon angesponnen.

Die fertige Single wird in den nächsten Tagen gedämpft und darf dann noch ein paar Tage auf auf der Haspel verbringen - das Garn ist mit Absicht etwas überdreht und soll sich jetzt erstmal dran gewöhnen. Zumindest, bis die nächste Portion soweit ist.

The finished single will be steamed one of these days and spend some more time on the niddy noddy - I overspun it on purpose and now it has to get used to that. At least until the next portion is ready.

Tour de Fleece - 16. Tag / Day 16

Dieses Wochenende habe ich mich nochmal richtig angetrieben - ich wollte endlich wieder mal ein Stück kriegen. Und es hat funktioniert: Wie man sieht, ist die Spule schon ganz ordentlich dick geworden :-)

This weekend I really pushed myself - I wanted to make some progress after all. And it worked: as you can see, the bobbin has already become nice and thick :-)


Mir ist auch aufgefallen, dass ich inzwischen eine ganz andere Qualität spinne als am Anfang. Das Garn ist wesentlich gleichmäßiger und die dünneren und dickeren Stellen existieren zwar noch, sind aber viel weiter auseinander. Es ist fast so, als hätten meine Hände entschieden, wie dick das Garn sein soll, und können jetzt ohne große Einmischung des Gehirns arbeiten ...

I also noticed that I am now producing a wholly different quality than in the beginning. The yarn is much more even, and while there are still thicker and thinner places, they are spaced much farther apart. It almost appears as though my hands have settled what the yarn is going to be like and can now produce it with hardly any interference from the brain ...

Tour de Fleece - 7. Tag / Day 7

Ein Drittel der Tour ist rum und ich bin immer noch gut im Rennen. Wenn ich mal schätze, komme ich pro Tag so etwa auf 1,5 Stunden Spinnzeit - viel mehr, als ich erwartet habe (ich hatte ursprünglich überlegt, mir das Ziel von einer Stunde pro Tag zu setzen, dachte aber nicht, dass ich das schaffen würde). Inzwischen sehe ich auch den Effekt: Die Spinnwolle wird weniger und das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen:

A third of the Tour is over and I'm still going strong. In my estimation, I'm putting in about 1.5 hours of spinning time per day - a lot more than I expected (I originally considered aiming for one hour per day but thought I couldn't reach that). I'm also starting to see some effects: The pile of roving is getting smaller and the results aren't bad at all:


Eine Spindel voll (ca. 25 g) habe ich schon auf die Spule abgewickelt und bin fleißig dabei, an der nächsten Portion zu arbeiten :-)

Tour de Fleece - 3. Tag / Day 3

Obwohl ich das ganze Wochenende auf einem Seminar war, habe ich mich so gut es ging in die Spinnerei gestürzt. Und das erste, was mir dabei klar wurde, war: Ich hatte ganz vergessen, wie viel Spaß das macht. Hatte vergessen, wie befriedigend das ganz einfache, primitive Spindel-spinnen sein kann. Darum bin ich auch am zweiten und dritten Tag weit über mein Ziel von einer halben Stunde pro Tag hinausgeschossen, wie man sieht:

Even though my whole weekend was taken up by a workshop, I tried my best to dive into the spinning. And the first thing I realised was: I had completely forgotten how much fun this is. Had forgotten how satisfying the simple, primitive spindling an be. And that's why on the second and third day I far surpassed my goal of half an hour per day, as you can see:


Das zweite, was mir klar wurde, ist, dass die Qualität des Fadens doch stark von meiner Gemütslage abhängt. Je ruhiger und entspannter ich bin, desto gleichmäßiger wird das Garn. Aber im Großen und Ganzen bin ich bisher sehr zufrieden mit der Qualität und freue mich schon drauf, das Garn zu verstricken.

Aber jetzt geht es erstmal weiter mit der Tour :-)

The second thing I realised was that the quality of the yarn really depends on my mood. The more relaxed and calm I feel, the more even the yarn. But on the whole I'm pretty satisfied with the quality so far and am already looking forward to knitting it.

But first the Tour goes on :-)

Eine Herausforderung / A Challenge

Das nenne ich mal perfektes Timing. Nachdem ich mich über ein Jahr lang ausschließlich den Rad gewidmet habe, habe ich gestern früh beschlossen, dass es Zeit ist, mal wieder eine Spindel in die Hand zu nehmen. Ich hatte auch schon eine Idee, was ich machen wollte, habe die Wolle aus dem Stash rausgesucht und zusammengestellt. Mit dem guten Gefühl, etwas geleistet zu haben, habe ich mich an den Computer gesetzt und fand das hier: Tour de Fleece 2008. So winkt dasSchicksal mit dem Zaunpfahl.

Hier meine Herausforderung: Ich werde an jedem Tag der Tour de Fleece mindestens eine halbe Stunde mit der Spindel spinnen UND dabei ein akzeptables Laceweight Dochtgarn produzieren, und zwar aus diesem (s. u.):

That's what I call perfekt timing. After I spent more than a year spinning almost exclusively on the wheel, yesterday morning I decided the time had come to once again pick up a spindle. I already had an idea what I wanted to do, picked out the roving from the stash and put the colours together. Afterwards, with the joyous feeling of having accomplished something, I sat down at the computer, where I found this: Tour de Fleece 2008. Looks like the helping hand of fate is smacking me upside the head on this one.

Now this is my challenge: For every day of the Tour de Fleece, I will spend at leasthalf an hour spinning on the spindle, AND I will produce a decent laceweight single yarn from this:


Merino in verschiedenen Uni-Farben. Ich habe nicht vor, die ganze Wolle während der Tour wegzuspinnen, sondern einfach so viel wie ich schaffe.Wenn sie fertig ist, wird diese Wolle übrigens ein Dreickstuch werden, mit dem hellsten Ton an der Spitze und einem Farbverlauf nach Dunkel. Vielleicht schaffe ich es ja sodar mal, ein paar Perlen einzustricken ...

Merino roving in several solid clolours. I don't intend to spin all of it during the challenge, but ony as much as I can manage. Once it is done, the yarn is going to become a triangular shawl with the lightest hue at the tip and the darker ones toward the base. I might even try my hand at some beaded knitting ...
