Vorweg: Ich betreibe keine Zukunftsdeutung.
Also alles eher unmystisch ...
Honigmassage
Hast du in dieser Liste etwas gefunden, was dich interessiert?
Zwei von Vier / Two Down, Two to Go
Even with the cats my Tour de Fleece spinning project continues, despite aggravated conditions - this tumbling, twirling spindle thingie is just asking to be batted around with one's paws ... Thus I spin while the two of them are asleep or not in a playful mood.
And as you can see, I'm making progress anyway, for this:

Ca. 560 m / 60 g Laceweight in kirschrot.
About 560 m / 60 g of laceweight in cherry red. This time I'm pretty happy with the quality - I'm obviously getting more practised ...
And since both niddy noddies are occupied now, I'll have to get started on the steaming. Then I'll finally have some real yarn, too :-)

Sibirische Woche / Siberian Week
No, the temperature was anything but siberian here. Instead the week was defined by our two siberian house mates, who bring a lot of life to our house. So here's another cat-photo heavy post :-)
Erstmal in guter Bambuswald-Tradition:
But first in the tradition of the cattery vom Bambuswald:
D'Artagnana "Jana" vom Bambuswald, 17 Wochen alt, 2,6 kg

Und jetzt lasse ich einfach Bilder sprechen :-)
And now I'll let the pictures do the talking :-)
Es gab Raufen:
There was scuffling:
Jagen:
Chasing:
Rumhängen:
Hanging around:
Verstecken: (In diesem Foto sind zwei Katzen)
Hiding: (There are two cats in this photo)
Kleiner Tip:
A little hint:
A minute ago Dodo was still here - where could he be?
Ganz viel Entdecken, an hohen Orten:
Lots of exploring, in places high:
Niedrigen Orten:
Low:
Und seltsamen Orten:
And weird:
Und natürlich wurde ganz viel geschlafen:
And of course there was a lot of sleeping:

By now the two of them have settled in beautifully. They march around the house as though they'd never known anything else, look for action and calm as they feel like, and vocally announce their needs - be it food, play or cuddling. And us bipeds are simply happy that they're feeling well :-)

Gefilztes Katzenspielzeug / Felted Cat Toy
With this post I finally manage to merge the kitteny and the fibery world - so there should be something for everyone :-)
After stocking up on cat toys in various pet shops (which for a playful kid like me was pure joy) I had the thought that a person versed in handicrafts should be able to create something like that on her own, too. I still had a few batts left of the trial package from Wollknoll which I'm not going to spin (not to my taste). And for a nice rustling sound of course I also needed some Kinder surprises - finally a reason to buy some ;-) (Admittedly the content was a bit of a let-down. Am I the only one who thinks that the kits are getting simpler? I seem to remember kits with more than ten individual pieces, now the maximum was four. Anyway, the chocolate was familiar and tasty.) Add to that some rice for the rustling, and I was set.

It took me less than a minute of intense work with soap and water to remember why I usually don't felt. The results may be pretty, but the effort ... not my thing. (Yeah, I know that less obsessive-compulsive personalities felt in the washing machine - but I also want to keep an eye on the progress)
I abandoned the rice pretty soon - the Kinder Eggs are obviously not water-tight, and soon the rice stopped rustling because it was stuck to the inside of the eggs. Instead I chose some beads that aren't to my taste and put those in the eggs.
Then there was some trial and error until I'd figured out the way the batt wanted to be treated (not to fold it around the egg, but to gently open one of the edges and slip the egg into the batt), and finally:

Voila!
Voila! A cat toy! Admittedly not very aesthetic. Somehow I imagined it a little smoother and less tattered. But then I'm not a cat.
Dodo dagegen ist eine, und seine Meinung:
Dodo, on the other hand, is one, and his opinion:

The thing must be killed! You have to fight it and wrestle with it and shake and bite and dig your claws into it, and after you've defeated it you can enjoy gnawing on the tails. Seems to be acceptable :-)
I'll have to see how long it takes the two of them to take it apart. For now the felt appears pretty durable. And besides, I have some more batts in reserve, so I can keep them coming :-)

Einzug / Moving In
Finally! After a long wait and several visits the day has come: Yesterday our new housemates D'Artagnana "Jana" and Dodo vom Bambuswald have moved in with us. To ease the transition they were accompanied by their former "can-openers". They seemed to have dealt pretty well with the rather short drive here:
As soon as the big carrier was opened, they started taking in their new surroundungs. A little timid at first, but with growing confidence they explored and sniffed everything, with Jana usually being the first and more adventurous, as expected.
Dodo hat sich auch gleich willkommen gefühlt:
Dodo soon felt welcome:

während Jana eine große Entdeckung machte:
while Jana made a big discovery:

She was so fascinated that she barely got around to kneading the soft sheep skin the way she wanted ... (Anyone wondering whether cats and an aquarium really go together can rest assured: we installed netting, which (hopefully) will keep the climb-happy Siberians and the reef from becoming too well acquainted)
There was some playing in between, and then the two kittens had to say good-bye to the people who had so lovingly taken care of them the past sixteen weeks.
But this didn't faze them, for there was so much more to discover.

Such as the fact that a fringed curtain is a great hiding place ...

... wenn man ihm erst Respekt beigebracht hat.
... as soon as you've taught it some respect.

By now the two of them already seemed more relaxed and ready for some hanging out on the scratch-posts.

Then there was the first meal in the new home which obviously turned out to everyone's satisfaction :-) (Jana also ate, but trying to photograph a dark cat against a dark kitchen in bad lighting without flash ... we didn't even try)
When bedtime approached, they set up their base camp in the bedroom, where there is not only the above-mentioned curtain, but also several cat-sized lairs in and around the bed and nightstands.
Contrary to our expectations, the night itself was unproblematic and calm. Apparently the little ones were just as exhausted from the exciting day as we were ... It wasn't until half past five that Jana started calling for her siblings, with whom she'd used to romp about at this time. But after some time and some TLC, she contented herself with her brother Dodo and myself.
Then it was time for some more exploration. Another room was thoroughly examined. Here the couch was mostly ignored, but the fireplace ...

The firewood appears to be incredibly interesting and there's just enough room for a little Siberian to squeeze into.
Even though they appeared pretty self-confident by now, they were obviously happy not to be alone: If they couldn't see each other for a while, usually one of them would start calling out until the other came running. But then everything was all right again :-)
After breakfast there was some thorough playing. Here the two visibly enjoyed the carpet in the living room - doing lots of high jumps and no slipping on the landing ...
Well fed and tired from playing, the sweeties came to our bed and demanded cuddling.
While trying to out-purr each other, they let themselves be artfully scritched, petted and kneaded until the little eyes turned heavy again ...

Dodo didn't quite make it to the blanket ...
And Jana did the Sibi-thing and just plopped on her back spreadeagled.
On the whole it appears as though they're dealing well with the move. If they continue like this, they'll have settled in in a few days and hopefully will hardly miss their old family ...

After all the spindling (which still continues) I was once again tempted to sit down at the wheel. And waiting for me there was the first batt for the mottled Lady's cardigan. This alpaca-silk blend had already been pretty recalcitrant in the carding, and since I also remembered the first spinning trial with its predecessor, I was determined that this time round the fiber would sit up and listen and do what I wanted.
I was even a really good girl and spun up a sample which I put next to the spinning wheel:

By now I realise that the weird sound in the back at the time was the muffled laughter of the batts who must have pulled a few fibery muscles trying not to break into guffaws.
For when I started spinning, I quickly realised that there were two opinions here: the alpaca's opinion and the silk's opinion. The alpaca insisted on a soft, loose, fuzzy yarn, while the silk endeavored to create a smooth yarn with lots of noils, inchworms and thin places. And my ideas? Were benevolently acknowledged, but merely as a suggestion without any obligation.

Even in this photo you can see that the silk (shiny places) and the alpaca (darker, dull places) really want nothing to do with each other. And it doesn't help that I cannot pre-draft the batt - it would simply fall apart. Thus I try to spin it as it comes.

And of course I remind myself that this will give the finished yarn a nice organic-uneven look, and that the other three plies are going to be a lot better-behaved (alpaca and merino just get along a lot better). And if it all gets too much, I can always reach for the spindle and the laceweight - at least that one behaves the way I want it ...

Über Wahrnehmung und Einbildung / On Perception and Imagination
A note in advance: This post will not have any pictures. There will be wooliness, but only of the mental kind. So if you’re here for the pictures, you’ll have to come back another time :-)
The occasion for today’s ruminations is the fact that last weekend another Soullight-Training took place – one in a series of workshops dealing with energy work, psychic skills and the like. And after finally experiencing some tangible success, I now have to face the question: Imagination or perception?
Let’s first talk about imagination. Imagination is generally viewed in a negative light. „That’s only in your imagination,“ we say, and „Stop imagining things!“ And sure, if with all the imagining you lose contact with reality, imagination can be dangerous for oneself as well as others. But on the other hand, imagination does make life more pleasant and more interesting – you only have to open a good book and for a while you imagine being somewhere else ... And finally imagination is inevitable and even vital to our functioning in daily life. Now this statement may make your toe-nails curl, but I intend to explain it later.
Kommen wir jedoch zur Wahrnehmung. Was ist Wahrnehmung überhaupt?
Now let’s deal with perception. What is perception? The way we usually imagine (!), perception is the process by which our sense organs inform us about the nature of reality. This notion is appealing, reassuring and wrong. Just how wrong it is can easily be discovered in the process of seeing alone: Instead of every photoreceptor faithfully passing on its perception to the brain, the cells compete, enhancing and suppressing each other's signals until finally a sort of consensus is transmitted to the brain. And that’s where the real fun starts. Here the information from the sense organs is routed this way and that, screened, sifted, modulated, associated, interpreted and finally turned into qualia, so that in the end there is something like the colour red. There is no red in reality. There are electromagnetic waves of different frequencies, but red? Only in our brain.
So what is the result of the process of perception? Not reality itself, but a model. And as every scientist knows, no model is ever equivalent to reality, but is merely a reflection, an image. And this image has a purpose: by simplifying reality, by reducing the complexity to a few relevant factors, the model lets us gain some understanding of reality, it provides a working base for our thinking. And yet every good scientist also knows that his model is not identical to reality and should not be mistaken for it.
The same is true for the model in our head. It is not equivalent to reality. But it provides the possibility of understanding one or another aspect of reality and to act accordingly. If we percieved reality in all of its detailed complexity, we’d be incapable of deciding or doing anything. That’s why I claim: Our imagining – both what reality is like and that this model acually is reality – is inevitable and vital to our functioning.
And anyway, do we have an alternative? As far as I can see, our only choice is to trust in our perception-imagination. Of course we should question it time and again, and if the answers are consistend, we assume that it is at least close to reality (or that our imagination has an eye for details, too ...) After all, it is the best tool for reflecting reality that we have. And it seems to have stood the test of time, evolutionarily speaking, otherwise we wouldn’t be here.
And with that I finally reach the point I’m trying to make. For in the course of the as yet four Soullight-Training weekends I have experienced things that have presented themselves as perception, but that my scientifically educated mind can only interpret as imagination. So I have to ask myself the question: Where do I draw the line between perception and imagination? Is it even possible?
To my mind, there is no objective point of view in this case, only a subjective one: that of the perciever. And from my subjective point of view I decide to accept my experiences as perception, not imagination. I trust in my perception, my (slowly awakening) psychic abilities and intuition. What do I have to lose? Perhaps the respect of some people who will now think I’ve finally gone off the deep end. But to be honest, the opinion of these people doesn’t really mean that much to me. And I have so much to gain, if my perception truly is an image of reality. Not only a better understanding of other people, which is basic prerequisites for my future as an alternative practitioner. But also (please forgive the grandiose expression) a deeper insight into the nature of existence – and with that the chance for psychic and spiritual growth. And after all, that’s what we’re here for. Or so I imagine.
In conclusion: From now on I will trust in my perception, be it visual, auditive, intuitive or psychic. I accept and appreciate it, but will also remember to critically scrutinise it every now and then to keep the perception as imagination-free as possible. I embrace the adventure of being psychic and am eager to see where it will take me.
PS: I’m aware that the above argument has holes big enough to drive a flock of sheep through. But to fill those, too, I’d have to write a whole book. If you’d like to discuss the subject, feel free :-)

Tour de Fleece - Geschafft! I did it!
Go me!
Und das Ergebnis:
_____
After giving my final sprint last week, I let the Tour wind down gently on the weekend (another two-day workshop). And I'm proud of myself: I did it! For each of the 23 days I spent at least half an hour spinning, and most days I did a lot more. Go me!
And the result:

Die Ausgangmenge der Wolle wurde zu diesem:
_____
The initial amount of roving was turned into this:

Fazit:
_____
130 g / about 1200 m dark red laceweight, and a few grams of the cherry red roving have been spun already, too.
The finished single will be steamed one of these days and spend some more time on the niddy noddy - I overspun it on purpose and now it has to get used to that. At least until the next portion is ready.
Conclusion:

Ich hab's verdient :-)

Schwere Geburt / Difficult Delivery

Last autumn I was once again seduced by amazun and spoiled myself with Knitting Patchwork-Socks. Thrilled by the new technique and the cool appearance of the socks, I wanted to cast on my first patchwork sock at once. Doing that, however, I encountered a problem I’ve been dealing with for a while: Some part of me appears to consider it an unbearable imposition to just knit a pattern the way it is written. In every knitting pattern as yet I’ve found something I didn’t like one hundred percent and which of course I had to change – no matter the mental and mathematical effort involved.
Same with the patchwork socks. There were several problems: The socks in the book are knit top-down while I knit toe-up. The patches in the book are knit in garter stitch, I prefer stokinette. And every time a patch is finished, all the stitches are cast off and have to be picked up again fort he next one. Unacceptable.
After going through some mental distortions, I cast on the first sock. Noticed after a while that I didn’t like the cetral line of stitches in the patches. Fiddled around until I’d worked out a technique I liked better. The sock, which meanwhile had progressed to the heel, was frogged – even though the not-so-pretty patches would only ever see the inside of a shoe, I’d still know they were there ... Score: Lenny: 0 – Socks: 0.5
Cast on again, knitting the new technique. Reached the heel again, realised that new technique looks stupid when knit over longer distances. More fiddling, this time trying each attempt for several rounds of patches. Finally found one I can live with. This sock had progressed so far that with some ribbing it would have been finished. Instead back to the ballwinder. Score: Lenny: 0 – Sock: 1.5
Cast on again, this time confident that I had the right technique. Knitted, knitted, knitted, technique seemed right, central stitches looked great, cast off especially loosely, and triumphantly held the sock in my hand. Which is where it stayed, because it absolutely refused to be pulled over my foot. For all the pretty central stitches, I had forgotten that the patches don’t stretch as much as stockinette, which would have been the prerequisite for getting foot and sock into agreement. When even a trip through the washng mashine didn’t change anything, the sock was exiled for the time being. Score: Lenny: 0 – Socks: 2.5
Some time later I was once again taken up by the patchwork fever and cast on a new sock – this time with fresh yarn so as not to carry on the curse of the old sock to the new one. And Lo and behold! This time everything came together. Two stitches more per patch made the difference and my foot could finally revel in the joy of a finished, perfect patchwork sock. So as not to lose the momentum of success I immediately frogged the old sock and this time its will seemed broken: In a short time it, too, turned into an example of patchworksockiness (we will skip here the four rounds of patches I had to frog because apparently I cannot count to six). And the result:

After almost a year of intense struggle, Lenny prevails as the winner *victorydances*
Okay, by now I've realised that the pattern of the yarn and the patches almost cancel each other out, and next time I'll try to work in some shaping, but so what - I win!

Tour de Fleece - 16. Tag / Day 16
_____
This weekend I really pushed myself - I wanted to make some progress after all. And it worked: as you can see, the bobbin has already become nice and thick :-)

_____
I also noticed that I am now producing a wholly different quality than in the beginning. The yarn is much more even, and while there are still thicker and thinner places, they are spaced much farther apart. It almost appears as though my hands have settled what the yarn is going to be like and can now produce it with hardly any interference from the brain ...
