Alpaka contra Seide / Alpaca vs. Silk

Nach dem ganzen Handspindeln (was natürlich auch noch weitergeht) hat es mich jetzt doch mal wieder gereizt, mich ans Spinnrad zu setzen. Und da wartete auch schon das erste Vlies für die melierte Damenjacke auf mich. Nachdem mir diese Seide-Alpaka-Mischung schon beim Kardieren nicht so ganz gefügig war und ich auch den ersten Spinnversuch der Vorgängerversion noch im Kopf hatte, war ich entschlossen, dass die Fasern diesmal parieren und das machen sollten, was ich von ihnen wollte.

After all the spindling (which still continues) I was once again tempted to sit down at the wheel. And waiting for me there was the first batt for the mottled Lady's cardigan. This alpaca-silk blend had already been pretty recalcitrant in the carding, and since I also remembered the first spinning trial with its predecessor, I was determined that this time round the fiber would sit up and listen and do what I wanted.

Ich war sogar ein richtig braves Mädchen und habe mir eine Probe vorgesponnen und neben das Spinnrad gestellt:

Inzwischen weiß ich auch, was dabei das seltsame Geräusch im Hintergrund war: Das mühsam unterdrückte Lachen der Vliese, die sich wahrscheinlich einige faserige Muskeln gezerrt haben bei dem Versuch, nicht laut loszuprusten.

By now I realise that the weird sound in the back at the time was the muffled laughter of the batts who must have pulled a few fibery muscles trying not to break into guffaws.

Denn als ich dann mit dem Spinnen angefangen habe, wurde schnell klar, dass es hier zwei Meinungen gab: Die des Alpakas und die der Seide. Das Alpaka bestand auf einem weichen, locken, fusseligen Garn, während die Seide ein glattes Garn mit schön vielen Hubbeln, Knubbeln und dünnen Stellen anstrebt. Und meine Vorstellung? Wurde wohlwollend zur Kenntnis genommen, allerdings nur als unverbindlicher Vorschlag.

For when I started spinning, I quickly realised that there were two opinions here: the alpaca's opinion and the silk's opinion. The alpaca insisted on a soft, loose, fuzzy yarn, while the silk endeavored to create a smooth yarn with lots of noils, inchworms and thin places. And my ideas? Were benevolently acknowledged, but merely as a suggestion without any obligation.


Man kann sogar in diesem Foto sehen, dass die Seide (glänzende Stellen) und das Alpaka (dunklere, matte Stellen) eigentlich nichts miteinander zu tun haben wollen. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass ich das Vlies nicht vorher ausziehen kann - es würde einfach auseinander fallen. Also spinne ich halt so, wie es kommt.

Even in this photo you can see that the silk (shiny places) and the alpaca (darker, dull places) really want nothing to do with each other. And it doesn't help that I cannot pre-draft the batt - it would simply fall apart. Thus I try to spin it as it comes.


Dabei erinnere ich mich daran, dass das ganze später einen schönen organisch-unregelmäßigen Effekt im fertigen Garn geben wird, und dass die anderen drei Fäden dazu sich wesentlich artiger spinnen werden (Alpaka und Merino kommen halt wesentlich besser miteinander zurecht). Und wenn es mir doch zu bunt wird, greife ich halt wieder zur Handspindel mit dem Laceweight - das macht wenigstens was ich will ...

And of course I remind myself that this will give the finished yarn a nice organic-uneven look, and that the other three plies are going to be a lot better-behaved (alpaca and merino just get along a lot better). And if it all gets too much, I can always reach for the spindle and the laceweight - at least that one behaves the way I want it ...
