Vor einigen Jahren hatte ich dieses Buch schon mal angefangen. Nach dem Lesezeichen zu urteilen, das noch darin steckte, habe ich es damals bis Seite 7 geschafft. Und heute weiß ich auch warum. Einerseits waren damals meine Englischkenntnisse noch wesentlich, naja, schulischer. Und andererseits ist dieses Buch eben etwas ganz anderes als die üblichen Alien und Action-lastigen Bücher, die ich gewohnt war und auch heute noch gerne konsumiere.
I'd already made a start at this book a few years ago. Judging by the bookmark still stuck in it, back then I made it all the way to page 7. And today I know why. On the one hand, in those days my English was much more, well, school-determined. And on the other hand this book is very different from the alien- and action-heavy books I was used to and still like to consume.
Kurze Zusammenfassung: Die (US-Amerikanische) Menschheit findet in der Hintergrundstrahlung des Universums eine nicht-zufällige Sequenz und versucht herauszufinden, was diese bedeutet. Und ein wichtiger Spoiler gleich zu Anfang: Sie schaffen es nicht. Das ist auch in der Geschichte von Anfang an klar und man sollte es von vornherein wissen. Wenn ich es nicht gewusst hätte, wäre ich von dem Buch wahnsinnig enttäuscht gewesen, weil ich immer auf die großartige Auflösung gewartet hätte.
Short summary: Humanity (or at least the US-american part of it) discovers in the background radiation of the universe a non-random sequence and tries to figure out what it means. And an important spoiler right at the beginning: They don't. In the story this is clear almost from the beginning and one should know it from the start. If I hadn't known that, I would have been deeply disappointed in the book because I'd have waited all the time for the grand solution.
Darum geht es aber gar nicht. Sicher, die Suche nach der Lösung steht im Mittelpunkt der Handlung und das eine oder andere Teilergebnis ist auch ganz interessant. Doch worum es eigentlich geht sind die Menschen. Sowohl als Menschheit als auch als Einzelpersonen. Es geht um philosophische Fragen, wie die, ob die Menschheit überhaupt bereit für einen Kontakt mit einer höherentwickelten Zivilisation ist, oder ob sie mit ihrer gewalttätigen Natur vielleicht eine Anomalie in der kosmischen psycho-sozialen Entwicklung darstellt.
But that's not what the book is about. Sure, the search for the solution is the focus of the story and some of the discoveries are pretty interesting. But what it really is about is humans. Both as humanity and as individual people. It is about philosophical questions such as whether mankind is even ready for contact with a more advanced civilisation, and whether its violent nature isn't merely an aberration in the cosmic psycho-social development.
Action gibt es keine, Spannung ein bisschen und Handlung sehr wenig - und selbst die beginnt eigentlich erst in Kapitel drei. Das Vorwort und die beiden ersten Kapitel nutzt der Ich-Erzähler zur ausführlichen Selbstdarstellung, dann geht es langsam los. Wenn man sich jedoch darauf einlässt und auch zum Mitdenken bereit ist (nicht im Sinne von Wer war's? sondern Könnte da was dran sein?) ist es doch nicht ganz leicht aus der Hand zu legen. Natürlich stößt man auch immer wieder auf die Tatsache, dass das Buch aus der Ära des Kalten Krieges stammt. Allerdings stellt sich die Frage, ob es heute so viel anders aussehen würde.
There is no action, hardly any suspense and very little story - and what story there is doesn't even start until chapter three. The preface and first two chapters serve as a self-portrayal of the first-person narrator, then it slowly gets going. However, if you're willing to let yourself in for it and be prompted to think along (not in a Whodunnit? but Is there something to it? way) the book isn't all that easy to put down. Of course one frequently encounters the fact that the book was written during the Cold War era. But that only raises the question whether it would be so much different today.
Und das ist eigentlich der Punkt: Das Buch wirft Fragen auf, statt sie zu beantworten. Natürlich präsentiert der Ich-Erzähler am Ende seine eigene Theorie über die Botschaft von den Sternen. Aber es bleibt dem Leser überlassen, ob er diese Theorie akzeptiert oder sich seine eigenen Gedanken macht.
And that really is the point: The book raises questions instead of answering them. Of course in the end the narrator presents his own theory about the message from the stars. But the reader is free to choose either to accept it or to think for himself.
Für mich ist dieses Buch eine eindeutige Alle-paar-Jahre Lektüre: Zum alle paar Jahre wiederlesen, um das Gehirn mal wieder auf neue Bahnen zu lenken. Wer allerdings beim Lesen lieber Zuschauer bleibt und möchte, dass auch wirklich was passiert, der wird diesem Buch nicht viel abgewinnen.
For me the book clearly falls into the every-couple-of-years category: to be reread every couple of years as a work-out for the brain. However, those who prefer to be spectators while reading and like to have something actually happen in the story won't find much enjoyment in this book.

Mein absolutes Lieblingsbuch von Tess Gerritsen. Leider auch das, das ihrer Karriere beinah das Genick gebrochen hätte, weshalb es kein weiteres in dieser Art geben wird. Schade. Aber wenigstens habe ich dieses, und es ist auch beim zweiten Mal lesen noch spannend und mitreißend.
My absolute favourite by Tess Gerritsen. Unfortunately also the book hat almost killed her carrier, which means there won't be another one like it. Pity. But at least I have this one, and even on the second reading it's still suspensefull and thrilling.
Manch einem mag die Geschichte am Anfang etwas langsam erscheinen. Aber einem Weltraum-Fan wie mir ist das ziemlich egal, denn die Handlung ist gewürzt mit jeder Menge fachlich fundierten und gut erzählten Details zur gegenwärtigen Raumfahrt, die aber trotzdem nicht die Geschichte und die Charaktere überwältigen. Und spätestens nach ein paar Kapiteln kommt dann auch die Handlung vollends in Fahrt und die Spannung steigt und steigt bis fast zur letzten Seite. Da opfert man auch gerne mal ein paar Stunden Schlaf, damit man heute Nacht noch erfährt, wie es denn ausgeht ...
Some people may find the story to lag a little in the beginning. But a space-nerd like me doesn't care, because the action is seasoned with lots of scientifically founded and well-told details about contemporary space flight, which still don't overwhelm the story or the characters. And after a few chapters the story starts picking up speed and doesn't stop until almost the final page. It makes one willingly sacrifice a few hours of sleep just so you can find out what happens tonight, not tomorrow ...
Außer ihrem Faible für die Raumfahrt zeigt Gerritsen allerdings auch ihren medizinischen Hintergrund, und das mag dem einen oder anderen Leser etwas auf den Appetit schlagen. Ich persönlich finde die medizinischen Details allerdings nicht übertrieben, sondern sie tragen dazu bei, den Leser spüren zu lassen, dass hier etwas wirklich verdammt Beängstigendes passiert.
Besides her liking for space flight, Gerritsen also shows her medical background, which may make some readers lose their appetite a little. Personally I don't think the medical detail is overdone, but instead it contributes to the reader's feeling that something really damn scary is going on here.
Für mich besteht das einzige Manko des Buches darin, dass es auch beim zweiten Lesen wieder dazu geführt hat, dass ich mal wieder ein paar Stunden sehnsüchtig auf verschiedenen Raumfahrts-Seiten rumgesurft bin (Die ESA rekrutiert! Aber keine Heilpraktiker *seufz* ). Zur Astronautin reicht's halt leider nicht. Aber sobald das erste Weltraumhotel eröffnet ...
For me the only drawback of the book is the fact that even on the second reading it still made me spend several hour cruising longingly across a number of space flight sites (ESA is hiring! Unfortunately not alternative practitioners *sigh*) I won't make an astronaut, but as soon as the first orbital hotel is up and running ...
Das Buch fällt für mich in die Kategorie Naschzeug fürs Gehirn: Nicht besonders anspruchsvoll, macht aber immer wieder Spaß.
To me the book falls into the category of brain candy: Not very demanding, but always fun.

Gegenwart: Eine junge Frau, kürzlich geschieden, kauft ein heruntergekommenes Haus. Beim Umgraben des Gartens entdeckt sie das Skelett eines Mordopfers und macht sich daran, denn Fall aufzuklären.
Boston, 1830: Eine junge irische Einwanderin nimmt ihre Nichte in ihre Obhut, nachdem deren Mutter im Kindbett stirbt. Kurz darauf ereignen sich mysteriöse Morde und man versucht, ihr das Kind abzujagen.
Short summary:
Present: A recetly divorced young woman buys a run-down old house. While digging up the garden, she discovers the remains of a murder victim and tries to find out what happened.
Boston, 1830: A young irish immigrant takes care of her niece when the baby's mother dies in childbirth. Shortly afterwards mysterious murders take place and someone tries to take the child away from her.
Vorweg: Den Handlungsstrang in der Gegenwart kann man sich getrost sparen. Es passiert nicht viel, und das was passiert, ist nicht besonders spektakulär. Er ist lediglich interessant, um die historische Perspektive, besonders auf den Charakter von Oliver Wendell Holmes, zu liefern.
In advance: The storyline playing in the present can pretty much be neglected. Nothing much happens here, and what does happen is not all that spectacular. It is merely interesting in that it provides some historical perspective, especially on the character of Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Der eigentliche Krimi im Jahr 1830 dagegen hat mir gut gefallen. Er war spannend und mitreißend, obwohl ich eigentlich keine Krimi-Leserin bin. Trotzdem muss ich die Leser wieder warnen: In diesem Buch ist es Gerritsen ein Anliegen, auf die Zustände der Medizin im frühen 19. Jahrhundert hinzuweisen. Und die entsprechen nunmal nicht ganz dem, was wir heute gewohnt sind (obwohl, wenn man in Atul Gawandes Better das Kapitel über das Händewaschen liest, fragt man sich, ob wir es wirklich so weit gebracht haben ...). Der zarter besaitete Leser sollte darum an manchen stellen innerlich die Augen schließen.
On the other hand, I liked the real mystery in 1830 pretty well. It was suspenseful and captivating, even though I'm not much of a mystery reader. However, I have to warn the reader again: In this book it is Gerritsens concern to point out the conditions of medicine in the early 19th century. And those just don't correspond with what we're used to today (although if you read the chapter On Washing Hands in Atul Gawande's Better, you have to wonder if we've really come all that far ...) So readers of a more tender disposition should mentally close their eyes in reading some scenes.
Überhaupt ist das Buch recht medizinlastig, zumal die meisten Hauptcharaktere Ärzte sind. Wer das mag, wird hier vieles finden, das ihn interessiert. Ich selbst werde das Buch sicher noch ein paar Mal lesen. Ob es aber ein Dauerbrenner wird, kann ich noch nicht sagen.
The book is generally pretty heavy on medicine, especially since most of the main characters are doctors. If you like that, you'll find many things of interest in this story. Personally, I'm probably going to read the book again once or twice. But whether it's really going to stay with me I can't say.
