Pure Magie / Pure Magic

Es gibt magische Momente im Leben. Einen durfte ich letzten Sonntag erleben. Wie es dazu kam?

There are magical moments in life. I got to experience one of them last Sunday. How that happened?

Denn:

If you've been listening closely the past week, around Thursday you may have heard a muffled scream in a mixture of frustration and happiness. For:

Das Flammentuch war endlich fertig. Endlich.

The Flaming Shawl was finally finished. Finally. And as is the norm in lace knitting, freshly from the needles it looked like a scrunched-up, unsightly heap of yarn spaghetti. But I knew going in that that was going to happen. That an important element is missing: The magic of blocking, which would turn this flabby mess into a beautiful shawl. At least that's what I firmly believed, after all this is my first try at a lace shawl.

And thus I faithfully got to work and first soaked the whole thing in water. With the result that instead of a flabby mess I now had a soaking lump of fiber. But I kept on trusting. The whole internet wouldn't lie to me, would it? And furthermore, I had pre-blocked the shawl several times for photographs and seen how lovely it looks then. And it was clear to me that without the influence of water it would always pull back into a flabby mess. Which it wouldn't do after a real blocking.

And thus I spread the sopping lump of fiber on the newly acquired foam mat, pulled it out lovingly pinned it:

Admired how the pattern opens up and the shawl grows in width and length. And new: If I take it off the needles now, I'll once again have a sopping lump of fiber. The magic hadn't happened yet. I had to wait another couple of days.

On Sunday it was time: The shawl had dried thoroughly. One by one I pulled out the pins without moving the shawl itself. And when the last pin was gone, I hesitated. And asked myself what I would do if after all these hours of work, after doing everything right - I'd still get a flabby mess.

Ich habe mir die Frage nicht beantwortet. Ich habe das Tuch einfach hochgehoben. Und die Magie war passiert:

I didn't answer the question. I just lifted the shawl. And the magic had happened:

The flabby mess and the sopping lump of fiber had turned into a delicate piece of art.

Und was mal so angefangen hat:

What started like this:

Wurde zu diesem:

became this:

Magie. Pure Magie.

Magic. Pure magic.

Wieder Da / Back Again

Seems like I was pretty busy the last couple days - another seminar (more on that soon), a new fibery hobby (more on that in the next couple days), a new esoteric discipline (more on that once I've experimented some more) and of course the usualy daily chaos. In between I even found some time to knit:

As you can see, I've finally reached the last colour segment. Which, however, didn't go as smoothly as I'd expected. The reason was neither the yarn nor the pattern, but the beads. I'd bought them quite a while ago to match the yarn and the first three colours looked lovely. But when I took the fourth bag into my hand and held it next to the yarn, my luck ran out: The beads were way too dark and their lustre was quite different from the other three colours.

Also fröhlich drauf los gestrickt.

No problem for the chronical stash hamster, who takes one step to the bead stash, and behold: Waiting there is a little bag that fits the colour scheme perfectly. Off to the knitting I go.

Yet after a few rows, a terrible suspicion dawned: The bag from the stash was signficantly smaller than the bags I'd ordered for the shawl. And after picking up new beads a few times, it appeared visibly less full. And even though I usually like to procrastinate this sort of problem in the hope that it will resolve itself (it rarely do...), this time it was too serious for that. And so, armed with tape measure and calculator, I came up with a rough estimate of how far the beads I had would last.

Ganz klar: neue Perlen mussten her.

The sad result: Not far enough. The deficiency isn't all that big (to be precise, it comes to about nine rows), but it's there. And this time the stash did not offer a matching substitute. It was obvious: New beads had to be acquired. So into the car I go and off to the next city with a shopping mile. And because I was so sure of myself, I merely packed some of the unknitted yarn to make sure the colour would match.

Which, unfortunately, turned out to be a tactical mistake: The new beads do match the yarn perfectly. But not the beads I've already knit up. Optimist that I am, I still gave it a try, as you can see in the close-up:

No way. No way at all. Gritting my teeth, I carefully tinked the row (luckily just one...) and got back into the car, this time accompanied by the entire piece of knitting. That did simplify the choice, and as soon as I was back home:

Aaahhh. Viel besser.

Aaahhh. So much better.

Na dann auf zum Endspurt...

Now off to the finish...

Flammentuch / Flaming Shawl

Well. I had intended to switch between the Flaming Shawl and the cardigan every week. But now I have identified a tangible date on which I'd like to have the shawl finished. And thus I boldly decided that for now I'm going to focus my effort on the scarf and put the cardigan on the back burner. With corresponding progress:

The red stripe is progressing nicely and I should reach the final part soon. Unfortunately that one is the most work-intensive, since it makes up about 45 % of the shawl. And that's not considering that I'm not yet sure about the finish - but quite sure it's going to be an extra piece of work...

Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure it's going to be finished on time. I hope...

Flammentuch / Flaming Shawl

As I predicted, the Flaming Shawl is entering the next level:

I've finally reached the red stripe. And now the colour shift is far more obvious and gives a better idea of what it will look like once I've finished it with a lovely earthy red.

What's not so apparent is the change in the pattern, but that might be different once the shawl is finished and blocked. And anyway, it's still missing the fourth pattern variant that will finish it off.

Flammentuch / Flaming Shawl

Even though I was busy last week knitting the cardigan and had fun with it, I was still excited to get back to knitting the Flaming Shawl. Which I did with a vigour, as you can see:

I have the ambition to finish the orange part by Sunday evening (which would put my total progress at 25%) so that I can get started on the red part. After all, I hadn't gotten that far on the first try...

Spitzenwinter - Neustart / Winter of Lace - Reloaded

I haven't posted about the Winter of Lace in quite a while, and for that there is a good reason. Namely that this:

dieses wurde:

has turned into this:

and is scheduled for a one-way trip to Frog City.

There were quite a few things that bothered me about it: the uneven centre strip, the too-many beads, and most of all the fact that the pattern just didn't come out the way I expected. So I decided that I wasn't going to waste any more time knitting a First Real Lace project that I'd never look at again afterwards.

Yet I was still hung up on the pattern I saw in my mind's eye. Designing it shouldn't be all that difficult. You take some graph paper (or in my case an Excel sheet), place the yarnovers where you want them and the rest is going to come together. I mean, how hard can it be?

Absolut, wie man sieht:

Really hard, as you can see:

A week ago I finally had to accept that my perfect pattern wasn't going to happen - at least until I've had some more lace experience under my belt. Thus I started pattern hunting for a replacement and found it: The Go Fly a Kite shawl. Beautiful and lacy, and it will allow me to vary the pattern for each new colour, by increasing the number of yarnovers inside the diamonds.

So weit bin ich jetzt:

Here's what I have now:

Lovely, isn't it? I'm still enchanted with the pattern and it is a joy to knit. And I'm already looking forward to seeing how the next colour turns out :-)

Flammentuch / Flaming Shawl

Why didn't anyone tell me this is so much fun? For the past week, this shawl pretty much ate my life. And after a little trial and error (switched needle sizes, changed the pattern several times) it went ahead at a brisk pace. Which I know is an illusion, because the rows are shortest in the beginning, and will get much slower towards the end.

But anyway, at the moment it's still exciting and fascinating and lots of fun. By now I've already reached the second colour and pattern and am fascinated by how different the patterns appear even though they are pretty similar on paper.

Aber genug geredet:

But enough talk:

Mein aktueller Stand.

That's where I am right now.

Noch ein paar Detailfotos:

Have some close-ups:

Ist das nicht toll? Ich liebe Spitzen-stricken :-)

Isn't it amazing? I love lace-knitting :-)

Spitzenwinter / Winter of Lace

Finally it has begun: The Winter of Lace, where each and every knitter may knit as much lace as they can stomach.

For me that means finally making a try at this technique. I've been looking forward to it for a while, and as someone or other may remember, I've already spun up the yarn for it. Last Sunday was officially the first day of winter and with that also the beginning of the Winter of Lace. And this is how it started for me:

Vier Farben selbstgesponnenes feines Spitzengarn.

Four colours of handspun laceweight. Four colours of beads to be knitted along with the yarn. A self-designed pattern, which will change every time I get to the next colour. And of course the accessories.

I'm already excited about how it's going to turn out. And since it's part of this knit-along to keep each other updated about our progress, I'm going to regularly report both here and on the Winter of Lace blog :-)
